A 'PEOPLE-powered' festival has enlisted the help of willing volunteers as the countdown to the event reaches its final days.

Tandem Festival comes to Lower Farm in Ramsden, near Witney, on the weekend of June 21 to 23, thanks to the vital work of its loyal supporters.

Over the last few months, the eco-friendly event has held several skills camps and build days across the county, which provide the infrastructure and decorations for the site.

Sunday's mural painting session was the latest activity day, with volunteers creating a huge wall of colour celebrating the festival.

Lead carpenter and volunteer, Cara Powell, revealed the event has helped her build friendships and give her direction.

She said: "I signed up to volunteer for Tandem two years ago at a time when I was feeling a little bit at a crossroads, having just graduated with an art degree and not quite sure where it would take me.

"I also wanted to expand my group of friends in Oxford and meet new people with different skills.

"Through Tandem Festival, I have a ready made band of friends and it's a hoot.

"Not only have I learnt about the inner workings of running a festival, I also got the chance to develop my building skills on site, which in turn helped me decide on my career as a fully trained carpenter."

Since April, a range of crafts have been used at the skills days, including stencil skills and basic building.

Wooden palettes were turned into furniture and signs to aid the festival's green ethos, with attendees encouraged to cycle or use low-carbon transport.

This is the festival's fifth year and features new family activities and a range of music, plus art, dance, talks and food-related attractions.

With the event just days away, Ms Powell is looking forward to seeing volunteers' work come to fruition.

She said: "It's a huge buzz seeing it all come together after working so hard for months.

"Seeing all the smiley faces arrive on site and make themselves at home, gives me a huge sense of achievement, having built such a magic space that was making so many people so happy."

Upcoming build days include a lantern-making session at Makespace Oxford at 6.30pm tonight and a cooking camp at Lower Farm on Saturday.
