MOTORISTS have been urged to take care on the roads today as heavy rain lashes down on Oxfordshire.

Thames Valley Police has warned of poor conditions on the roads, and traffic has been heavier than usual as more people jump in their cars to avoid the weather.

UPDATE: Flood alert issued for Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire County Council said this morning that there were 'major delays' on many routes, while Stagecoach Oxford reported delays of up to 45 minutes.

Flooding has reportedly cut off passenger access to Radley train station, while other areas - including the Osney Mead industrial estate in Oxford, Quarry Hollow in Headington, and part of the M40 - also have large puddles of standing water.

A yellow weather warning covering the county is in place until 11pm tonight, and the Met Office predicted a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms in Oxford at 11am.

Police have advised drivers to keep their distance, use headlights and take extra care around pedestrians.

Some of the county's busiest roads were experiencing more congestion than usual during morning rush hour, including the M40, A40 and A420. 

Heavy rain has caused a leak in the roof at Berinsfield Preschool, causing it to close today, according to a post on the Spotted Berinsfield Facebook page.

Other posts on the page report that part of the village, near Wallingford, is also flooded.
