RE-ROUTING traffic from the A34 through villages has made life ‘intolerable’, councillors have said.

By the end of this month, 25 overnight closures will have taken place on the A34 over the last three months, councillors said. Those closures have meant traffic has had to be diverted from that road and taken through small Oxfordshire towns and villages.

Vale of White Horse district councillors will be asked to agree that the scheduled closures have been a ‘totally intolerable blight on the lives of many of the residents of Wantage, [Wantage] Charlton ward and further afield’.

The council’s scrutiny committee could invite managers of Highways England and other groups responsible for the road and roadworks to appear before them.

A motion will be brought to Vale of White Horse District Council’s meeting next week by Wantage Charlton ward councillors Andrew Crawford and Patrick O’Leary.

In his motion, Mr Crawford states: "Residents of impacted houses report that [diversions] create intolerable noise, sleep deprivation and vibration and structural damage to properties, as many of their homes are only a matter of feet away from the highway."

The motion, which is likely to get support from the authority, will be discussed at next Wednesday's council meeting.
