Town celebrates 20th annual Witney in Pink Day 2019

The 20th Witney in Pink Day saw a pink car parade, flash mob, storm troopers, entertainment from bands and singers and dancers.

There was also a tombola, cake stall and pink shop window competition where shops around the town decorated their windows in pink.

The town event happens every year to raise money for Against Breast Cancer - an Abingdon-based charity that funds pioneering research into new cancer treatments.

A special tree of remembrance was planted during the activities yesterday in the parish church of St Mary’s, on Church Green, to mark the 20th anniversary.

It is to honour all those who have lost their lives to breast cancer and people are invited to write personal tributes to their late loved ones, and hang them on it.

Witney Action Group chairman Jeanne Chattoe, helps to organise the event every year.

She said: "It was an amazing day. People who took part in our pink car parade came as far as Yorkshire and there were 16 cars in total. 

"There ws a local lady on a pink scooter, street collections, cake stalls - everyone was incredibly generous, it was just an incredible day."

Pink Day was started by Ms Chattoe to remember her sister Delia Winkler, who she lost to breast cancer 25 years ago.

So far, the event has managed to raise over £250,000 over 20 years.

She added: "I tried to think of different ways to fundraise and came up with Witney in Pink. Shop owners can cover shops in pink, staff can dress in pink and the whole town got on board.

"It's just got bigger and bigger over the years."

Ms Chattoe is counting the money that the event raised today.
