THIEVES stole an expensive device from a woman's car this morning at an Oxford retirement home.

It happened at around 9.45am when she noticed two men had jacked-up a car in the car park at Douglas Veale House in Headington.

The woman, who has asked not to be named and was visiting a relative at the home, said: "I was in the process of getting changed when I heard a horrible noise.

"I noticed these men had jacked-up my car. I initially thought that someone had a flat tyre and called the AA to get it replaced but got the wrong car.

"So I went down and called out to them, 'Come here please', to which one of the men replied 'just a minute' before he loaded my catalytic converter into his van and off they sped."

The thieves used an angle grinder to cut off the exhaust and take the device which the woman says is worth £300.

She called the police, who said it would help their investigation if they could see CCTV footage.

However, the emergency help line at Douglas Veale House is not available on weekends and so she will have to wait until tomorrow to get the management at the home to access the footage.

Thames Valley Police is investigating.

The first man is described as white, of medium height and build with short fair or light brown fair, aged in his mid-twenties.

The second man is also white and of medium height and build.

Both men spoke with eastern European accents.
