Plans to extend the beer garden of a popular riverside pub in central Reading have been approved.

Wetherspoons will expand The Back of Beyond’s beer garden by turning a car park and bin area into seating for customers.

Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) Planning Applications committee unanimously backed the proposal at last night’s (November 13) meeting.

The only opposition to the application came from one neighbour at the Verto apartments, who raised concern about noise from the increased use of the beer garden.

Councillor Tony Page, lead member for Planning, called in the application and said he is happy the report covers issues he had concerns over.

He added that he thinks it is “a tad cheeky” for a resident of Verto apartment to complain as the 108 Kings Road pub has existed far longer.

The design suggests an extra six tables will be added to the garden. The extended garden area would be open from 12pm.
