ALMOST 20 flood alerts and one more serious flood warning remain in place for Oxfordshire this morning.

Three red warnings had been issued for the Wendlebury Brook in Wendlebury near Bicester (which was inundated yesterday) and the River Cherwell from north of Banbury to Upper Heyford.

However, this morning the warnings at Wendlebury, and the River Cherwell from Charwelton to above Banbury, were lifted.

The flood warning at the River Cherwell, from below Banbury to just above Upper Heyford, remains in place.

This means property flooding is expecting, and residents are urged to move family, pets and valuables to safety and avoid contact with flood water.

The usually busy cycle path and footpath at University Parks in Oxford, known as Mesopotamia, was completely submerged this morning.

A reader who passed at 10.30am told us: "It's closed due to flooding, I had to turn back. It's completely under water."

He said some cyclists who attempted to pass ended up with water 'up to their heels'.

Addressing Oxford specifically, the Environment Agency has said: "Water levels on the River Thames in the Oxford area are high and water is out of banks in various places as a result of heavy rainfall over the past week.

"There is no further rainfall forecast tonight with a few showers tomorrow, but the risk of flooding remains as water moves through the river systems.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and our incident response staff have been in the area clearing weed/trash screens. Please remain safe and aware of your local surroundings and avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, especially along the River Thames towpaths."
