A DRINK driver caught at nearly five times the legal limit has been handed a suspended jail term.

Aigars Gulbis, was caught driving a Vauxhall Meriva while above the legal alcohol limit on April 27 at Bourne Street, Didcot.

The 41-year-old of Sinodun Road, Didcot, had initially denied the offence but was found guilty and sentenced at Oxford Magistrates' Court on October 4.

Gulbis was found to have 173 mcg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.

The legal limit is 35mcg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.

For the unusually high reading the Latvian national was handed a suspended jail term of 12 weeks, suspended for 12 months and made subject to a number of further community requirements.

He must also complete five rehabilitation activity requirement days as part of the sentence and perform 150 hours of unpaid work over the next 12 months.

Gulbis was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £122 and court costs of £200.

He was also disqualified from driving for 36 months.

That disqualification may be reduced by nine months if Gulbis completes a relevant and approved driving course
