A MAN in his 80s fell to his death in Oxford city centre yesterday.

At around 11.05am, police were called to Greyfriars Street next to the Westgate Centre, to a report of a man who had appeared to have fallen from the shopping centre's roof terrace.

The man, who was from Oxfordshire, sadly died at the scene.

Police cordoned off Greyfriars Street which re-opened at around 2.30pm.

The circumstances are being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

His next of kin have been informed.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) also attended the scene.

One eye witness, Jade Smith, who lives next to where the incident happened, said she saw the man’s body on the ground and people around him.

She said: “I saw him as I went to work, sadly it happened next to my house. I saw him before emergency services arrived.”

People have now questioned the safety of Westgate’s roof terrace following the incident.

One reader, Amy Baird, commented: “This is awful, first thing I thought when they reopened the Westgate was the glass barrier up on the terrace wasn’t high enough. How sad.”

Another person, Katherine Rawlings, commented: “I took one look at the roof and wondered if something like this might happen. I agree with the comment below. Higher barrier and cast iron grille as with the Eiffel Tower in Paris.”

Others however have questioned how the man fell as there are around 4-5ft high glass railings along the terrace.

Gavin Brown commented: “The Westgate is a good complex that complies with all the necessary laws and regulations, it’s very sad news but there must be more to it.”

We asked the Westgate Centre whether it takes responsibility and if better safety measures should be in place, but it refused to comment, referring all queries to the police.
