A VARIETY of Minis have gone on display in a shopping centre this morning to celebrate the car’s heritage and history in the area.

Members of Mini clubs across Oxfordshire are showcasing their favourite cars at Templars Square in Cowley.

The public will also get the chance to see the car manufacturer’s latest model, which doesn’t hit the road until next month – the Mini Electric.

Tanya Field, 48, one of the event’s organisers, explained her passion for the car.

She said: “We’ve got a number of Minis in the family and my husband has worked at the plant for 31 years.

“We’re here to celebrate Minis and the connection to the factory and for workers to come and reminisce and let the younger people learn about the cars.

“It’s coinciding with half term so kids can come and see the cars, and doing something like this is great for older people too.”

Six of the ten cars on display have been lent by members in Oxfordshire, who meet once a month to discus all things Mini.

Another local member, 51-year-old Colin Woodage, uses his Morris Cooper Mark II – which is as old as him – for rallies.

He said: “I’ve been into Minis for 20 years and got into it as an enthusiast.

“I do rallies all over Europe so the car requires a lot of maintenance.”

Mr Woodage takes part in navigational rally car tours, which can be up to 2,000 miles and last between a week and ten days.

On Tuesday, members of staff from the Mini plant in Oxford will be joining the cars to talk about the plant.

Steve Wrelton, Mini Plant Oxford spokesman, said: “The exhibition at Templars Square is a fantastic celebration of Oxford’s car making heritage.

“With just a couple of weeks to go before the market launch of the all new Mini Electric, we’re delighted to include one of our cars in what is a great line up of vehicles from across the decades.”

The exhibition features a 1960 Austin Mini Countryman, Mini police van, 1968 Mk2 Cooper, 1963 Wolseley Hornet, 1990 Mini Cooper S, Mini Clubman, Mini Pick-up, Mini Mayfair and a 2001 Mini Cooper.

The exhibition will run until Saturday, February 22.
