A VOLUNTARY organisation which supports local projects will be opening its ninth open art exhibition later this week.

The exhibition - run by Carterton Lions Club - will begin on Thursday and run until Sunday at the Carterton Community Centre.

There will be 156 exhibits on display, with a variety of themes and methods.

Maddy Radburn, the art exhibition administrator, said: “There is going to be a very wide variety of artwork on display, including watercolours, oils, acrylics and some textiles, which makes a fabulous array all round.

“Some of the artwork is very modern art, whilst others display beautiful scenery.”

As an added feature this year, visitors will be able to take part in 'Artists at Work' and see how the paintings and drawings are created, with an opportunity to chat to the artists as well.

Julie Burdon-Stone, John Haynes, Roger Jones and Robert Marchant will all be on hand between 11am and 1pm, and between 2pm and 5pm.

Mrs Radburn explained: “We're very pleased to have the artists, they themselves volunteered to do it, which is absolutely delightful.”

One group returning will be students from Burford School and Community College, whose work the Lions are excited to display.

On the Saturday and Sunday, there will be an exhibition of work by pupils from local primary schools (Carterton Primary, Bampton CoE Primary and St Joseph's Catholic Primary in Carterton) and Burford College.

Mrs Radburn said: “Last year we had the students from Burford College, and their work was amazing.

“What these 16 and 17 year-olds can do is wonderful.”

The artwork on display are all for sale, with 20 per cent of proceedings going towards the Club to fund local projects, including Carterton Gymnastics Club, a local Memory Club and Carterton Family Centre.

The Club was established in 1985 with the help of Witney Lions and is part of the largest completely voluntary service organisation in the world, Lions Clubs International.

The exhibition will be open Thursday, Friday (11am-6pm), Saturday (10am-5pm) and Sunday (10am-4pm).
