Are we allowed to visit our other halves during the coronavirus pandemic?

Couples who do not live together have been asking the question, including a resident in Witney.

They said: "I need some advice. I live in Carterton and my girlfriend lives in Witney. Can I see her? She is putting pressure on me going to her house. I haven’t yet. But she wears the trousers."

People have responded discouraging him from visiting his lover, saying everyone should be staying home.

Amanda Sager commented: "Seriously?! We are on lockdown. You can’t see anyone? I can’t even see my family. The more we abide by these rules then hopefully it will be over sooner. Then she can see you."

Anna Antell said: "Obviously [she] doesn't care about you and your health. If she did she would be telling you to stay home and stay safe. It's life and death reality."

Britain's deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries said during the daily press conference on Tuesday that couples who do not live together should either take the plunge and move in or stay separate for the duration of the lockdown.

She said: "If you are two individuals, two halves of the couple, currently in separate households, ideally they should stay in those households.

"The alternative might be that for quite a significant period going forward they should just test the strength of their relationship and decide whether one wishes to be permanently resident in another household."

She added: "What we do not want is people switching in and out of households. It defeats the purpose of the reduction in social interactions and will allow transmission of disease.

"So perhaps test really carefully your strength of feeling, stay with the household either together or apart but keep it that way while we go forward because otherwise we will not all be working towards achieving our outcome."
