A PROLIFIC thief with more than 100 previous crimes to his name has again appeared in the dock after snatching £1,430 of sunglasses from a city shop.

Jamie Clark carried out the brazen shoplift not long after he was released from prison for yet another string of thefts as well as a burglary offence.

The 30-year-old of Luther Street, Oxford, appeared for sentencing for his latest crimes at Oxford Magistrates' Court yesterday.

At that hearing he was sentenced after admitting two separate incidents of theft from city shops.

Outlining the case prosecutor Rhiannon Winter said Clark entered Boots on Cornmarket Street, Oxford, on February 20 this year.

While there he walked up to a sunglasses display before proceeding to empty that display into a Bag for Life he was carrying, before fleeing.

The total value of the stolen goods was £1,430.

Despite first denying that offence he changed his plea to guilty before his trial.

He went on to admit another offence of theft whereby he stole goods to the value of £5.15 from the Co Op, Cowley Road, on Monday.

It was also revealed at the hearing that Clark has a long history of previous crimes, made up of 45 convictions for 106 offences.

Of those, 63 are for theft matters and 26 are for fraud offences.

He also committed the theft of the sunglasses shortly after he was released from an 18-month jail term he was handed for six shoplifting offences and one burglary.

In mitigation his defence team said that Clark had been making progress recently and had been engaging with local charity organisations including Crisis and Turning Point.

Clark was handed an 18-month community order, to include a 12-month drug rehabilitation requirement, programme participation and 12 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

He must also pay back £1,430 in compensation.
