STREETS are to be named after former councillors, who have passed away.

Two streets in future developments in Carterton are set to be named after councillors from West Oxfordshire District Council (WODC).

In addition to working at WODC, Joe Walcott and George Mason also served with the RAF at Brize Norton.

Mr Walcott was elected to WODC in 1995, and was chairman between 2002 and 2006, the year he was also awarded an MBE.

A former mayor of Carterton, he stood down from WODC in March 2013 and died in 2018.

Mr Mason was formerly the deputy mayor of Carterton and was a district councillor between 1999 and 2010. He died in 2017.

Council leader James Mills said: “Joe and George both served their country, West Oxfordshire and Carterton with distinction so it seems fitting we recognise their achievements with the naming of the streets.

“The significant contribution of these individuals also reminds us of the large and ongoing commitment of the RAF and their contribution to helping in the fight against Covid-19.”
