STENCILS scattered over a busy Oxford road demand a safe footpath and cycleway be created.

The chalk protest was made on Eynsham Road – the B4044 – near to Dean Court in Botley.

It highlights what locals say is a dangerous road used by commuters where some residents have been asking for years for a safe cycle track.

The stencilling was done by members of Oxfordshire's local Greenpeace branch this week.

The group is calling for the Government to foster a 'green recovery' from the coronavirus pandemic, with investment in public transport, walking and cycling.

Oxford Mail:

Reacting to the action, Cumnor Hill resident Janet Budd said: "We need a green recovery, including massive investment in walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure here in Oxfordshire.

"That’s why I’m really pleased to see these clear messages in chalk to the Government on Eynsham Road at Dean Court. It highlights a dangerous road used by commuters where local people have been asking for years for a safe cycle track.

"We need more space for people to walk and cycle safely in Oxfordshire, not £27 billion for new road building."

Oxfordshire County Council is currently in the process of making around £600,000 worth of emergency travel improvements to help lift lockdown, many of them aiming to encourage walking and cycling.

Among the scheme, it is planning to block cars from parts of Cowley to create a Low-Traffic Neighbourhood.
