Residents are advised to seek shade, drink lots of water and wear UV sunglasses to stay safe in the heat.

People should also keep an eye out for vulnerable groups like older people, very young children, or those with serious illnesses, who may be vulnerable in very hot conditions.

Coronavirus safety guidelines should also still be adhered to.

Oxfordshire county council consultant in public health, Dr Eunan O'Neill said: "Most of us look forward to enjoying the sunshine, but for some people it can bring some real health risks. It's easy to stay safe in the sun by staying hydrated, avoiding sunburn, and staying out of the sun during the hottest times of the day.

"It is also critical that we ensure that we all continue to adhere to Covid-19 guidance at all times – wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces, washing our hands regularly, and maintaining social distancing."

People should also never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals and keep your bedroom and living space cool by closing the curtains on windows that receive the sun, and opening windows at coolers times of the day – and at night – where you can.

Turning off all non-essential lights and electrical items can help so as not to generate excess heat.
