AN Oxford pub which was forced to shut for the coronavirus lockdown has revealed that it will remain closed.

The Bicycle Shed bar opened in Banbury Road, Summertown in 2018, and had become a popular destination was one of only two real pubs in the area.

Managers said that the impact of the pandemic had proved too much and forced its closure.

In a statement, the pub said: "Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the grip it has already taken on the bar and restaurant industry, we’re extremely sad to say The Bicycle Shed will be closing permanently. we’re not big enough to sustain the business in the current climate and it means we’ve been left with no choice but to close.

"It has been such a fun place to work. Everyday we’ve met such lovely people and we’ll miss every one of you. Thank you for all the great memories. We wish you all the best!

Oxford Mail:

"Thank you Summertown and goodnight."

The pub was part of the national City Pub Group, whose portfolio also includes Oxford's St Aldate's Tavern and The George Street Social. Both pubs have failed to reopen after lockdown, though notes on their wesbsites insist they will "be back soon".

Drinker, Leonard George from Summertown, said: "This is terrible news. It was the best pub in the north of Oxford by miles. It was quirky, fun, cool and exactly the place we needed – and now it's gone. I'm gutted. I would love to think someone else will come in and make a go of the place but I'm not optimistic in the present climate."
