OXFORD East MP Anneliese Dodds has accused the Government of being 'too slow' in its financial help for people self isolating.

The Labour shadow chancellor, responding to those on lower incomes facing lost earnings now being eligible for a one-off payment of £500, said it was welcome but added it should have been in place much sooner.

She said: “Labour have called time and time again for people who need to self-isolate to get access to proper financial support.

“We welcome this belated introduction of extra support, but it shouldn’t have taken months for the penny to finally drop that people on low incomes needed more help."

The MP added: “This payment depends on Test and Trace working, so it’s vital that the Government sorts it out and everyone who needs a test can get one quickly.

“And with the vast majority of workers ineligible for this payment, Government must work urgently to fill any gaps.”

From September 28 it will be a legal requirement in England for anyone told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace to do so with rule breakers facing fines of up to £10,000.
