OXFORD's Lib Dem MP has told the Government to 'get a grip' on its testing system to find out who has the coronavirus.

In a letter to the health secretary Matt Hancock, Layla Moran, the MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, said she was profoundly disappointed with the national testing system.

The letter comes after people from across the Lib Dem MP's constituency have written to her with stories of far-flung testing site bookings, including the Isle of Wight, Leicester and Dundee.

In her letter, the MP said: "This is simply not good enough and the Government has to get a grip on the issue quickly."

She added: "My constituents rightly anxious and frustrated because they or their relatives cannot be tested (despite being asymptomatic), have written to me to tell me just how stressed and exasperated they are by this situation.

"I'm aware this is a complex issue, but having a robust test and trace system in place ahead of a potential second wave must be a top priority for this Government.

"And we need the public to trust the system. What's clear from my postbag is that they don't right now. That threatens to have serious consequences in the winter and beyond."

Last week, there were reports of people from Oxfordshire being offered tests all over the UK.

The Government has said delays in testing are a result of a surge in demand in recent weeks, with a quarter of people requesting one not actually exhibiting coronavirus symptoms.

The labs which are processing the tests, known as Lighthouse Labs, have been identified as a 'bottleneck'.

While there is technically plenty of room for people to turn up to Oxfordshire's testing centres, the nearest lab in Milton Keynes does not currently have the capacity to test the swab samples for everyone in the county who would like to be tested; and a similar picture has developed across the UK.
