A MAN who stole more than £1,000 worth of alcohol from Tesco has been spared jail.

Lewis Tyrone Cyprien was given a suspended sentence for his ‘persistent dishonesty’.

The 28-year-old, of no fixed abode, appeared in the dock of Oxford Magistrates Court on August 21 and admitted stealing:

  • Three bottles of alcohol, worth £61.50, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 8
  • Two bottles of alcohol, worth £41, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 10
  • One bottle of alcohol, costing £17, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 11
  • Cleaning products, costing £25, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 22
  • Cleaning products and one bottle of alcohol, costing £70, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 24
  • Three bottles of alcohol, costing £56.25, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 25
  • Two bottles of alcohol, costing £63, from Tesco on Cowley Road on June 6
  • Three bottles of alcohol, costing £65, from Sainsbury’s in the Westgate Centre on July 9
  • One bottle of alcohol, costing £27.50, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 9
  • Three bottles of alcohol, costing £69, from Sainsbury’s in the Westgate Centre on July 10
  • One bottle of alcohol, costing £27.50, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 10
  • Five bottles of alcohol, costing £105, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 15
  • Four bottles of alcohol, coting £82, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 18
  • Four bottles of alcohol, costing £80, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 20
  • Fragrance and body sprays, costing £50, from Boots on Cowley Road on July 23
  • One bottle of alcohol, costing £19.50, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 28
  • Four bottles of alcohol, costing £80, from Tesco on Cowley Road on July 30
  • Five bottles of alcohol, costing £82, from Tesco on Cowley Road on August 4
  • Four bottles of alcohol, costing £85, from Tesco on Cowley Road on August 7
  • Three bottles of alcohol, costing £61.50, from Tesco on Cowley Road on August 8
  • Four bottles of alcohol, costing £82, from Tesco on Cowley Road on August 8
  • Four bottles of alcohol, costing £68, from Tesco on Cowley Road on August 11.

Another 28 offences were also ‘taken into consideration’.

He was also convicted of breaching a community order made by the same court on December 13 for three counts of assault by beating, criminal damage to a back door on October 13 and stealing gaming equipment, books and £100 in cash.

His community order was revoked.

Cyprien was sent to prison for two months, suspended for 18 months because ‘the offences are so serious and his repeated and persistent dishonesty’.

He was made to pay a victim surcharge of £128 and must have treatment for his drug dependency under the direction of probation for 12 months.

He must also take part in the ‘Building Better Relationships’ course.
