OXFORDSHIRE is one of the most dangerous places for cyclists, according to new figures.

Price comparison site USwitch compiled data from the Department for Transport, looking at all of the casualties on the roads over the last five years.

In the county there were 290 crashes involving somebody on a bike being killed or seriously injured.  

But what exactly are the most dangerous roads in Oxfordshire?  

Here we break down the data about casualties over the last five years:

  • Total: 1,503
  • Per 100,000 people: 217.30

Casualties by road user:

  • Involving pedestrians: 199
  • involving cars, taxis and minibus: 614
  • involving cyclists: 290
  • involving motorbikes: 329

Casualties by road type:

  • On a one way street: 5
  • On a single carriageway: 1,195
  • On a dual carriageway: 203
  • At a staggered junction: 366
  • At a roundabout or mini roundabout: 120
  • On a private drive or entrance: 77

And the ages of people involved:

  • Under 16: 80
  • 16-24: 281
  • 24-55: 730
  • 55+: 384

The government data refers to a ‘casualty’ as somebody who has died or been seriously injured and is recorded at the roadside.

Emergency services have dealt with at least five serious road traffic collisions on Oxfordshire roads this week.

Firefighters said it had been an ‘extremely busy’ time ahead of National Road Safety week – warning drivers about the dangers of using phones and getting distracted behind the wheel.
