AN Oxfordshire location has been named one of the best places to live in the country.

The ‘down-to-earth’ West Oxfordshire town of Charlbury is included in The Sunday Times list of best places to live in the South East thanks to its beer and music festivals – hopefully returning this summer.

The judges said it was their pick of the Cotswolds Villages boasting a speedy commute into Oxford and only an 80minute train journey into the Capital.

The guide adds: “The residents are an active bunch, getting involved in everything from am dram and art to environmental works through the village ‘Green Hub’.

“The community owed deli and café has been a lifeline during lockdown, and The Bull – one of four welcoming pubs – has been keeping folks fed with luxurious heat-at-home takeaways (truffle cauliflower mac and cheese £14 for two).”

Much-anticipated events in the area include Charlbury Street Fair and Charlbury Beer Festival, with the latter hosting the Aunt Sally World Championships.

The average house price also sits at £400k with the average rental getting around £850 pcm.

Helen Davies, The Times and Sunday Times Property Editor said: “This guide has never been so important. The pandemic has taught us just how much we rely on our homes, our communities and our surroundings. With working from home now common, it’s no surprise that many of us are reassessing our priorities and thinking hard about where we really want to live.

“Our focus for this year has been community, countryside and convenience. It hasn’t been a year for big cities or small villages. Instead it is small towns that have shone: big enough to have everything you need within walking distance and small enough for everyone to feel connected.

“With miles of ancient woodlands, panoramic views and timeless, picture-perfect villages such as Tilford, Shere and Abinger Hammer, life in the Surrey Hills is a gloriously romantic rural idyll - and it’s all within commuting distance of London.”
