CAMPAIGNERS have posted almost 200 broken hearts on an MP’s door.

Supporters of the Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill delivered poems and messages to the business address door of Wintey MP Robert Courts earlier today.

Today would have been the date for the second reading in Parliament of the private members’ bill in the House of Commons, however it has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A date for the second reading has yet to be announced.

The bill was first presented to Parliament last September.

Mr Courts said: “Rather than contacting me to arrange a virtual meeting to discuss their concerns, a group of activists came to my constituency office this morning, pointlessly vandalised the front door and made a female member of my staff feel intimidated.

“This Government is taking unprecedented steps to combat climate change, including being the first major economy in the world to legislate for net-zero emissions by 2050.

“The UK is continuing to lead the world in taking ambitious action to tackle climate change as we look forward to hosting the important COP26 summit later this year.

“Stunts like this, it’s impossible to ignore the waste of resources involved in this use of paper, not only do nothing to tackle climate change but undermine support for the very cause these activists purport to support.

“I would encourage these activists to direct their energy more constructively to improve the environment around them, such as by joining a local litter pick in line with covid rules.”

The incident today was not the first time campaigners have targeted Mr Courts’ business address door.

In October, paper plates criticising the MP’s decision to vote against extending free school meals were posted to the Waterloo House door in Witney’s High Street.
