There are no immediate plans to reopen the walk-in Covid vaccination site in Witney but the booster roll-out is being ramped up across Oxfordshire, say the NHS.

The walk-in vaccine centre in the council's town centre shop on Welch Way, offered booster jabs along with first and second doses of the Covid vaccine to 12 to 17 years olds.

It administered 4,887 vaccinations in just under a fortnight with snaking queues and reportedly three-and-a-half hour waits.

On Sunday, prime minister Boris Johnson announced a ramping up of the third jab rollout, as the Government aims to give one million boosters each day in the fight against the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

There were huge queues at vaccine centres in Oxford for the second day in a row on Tuesday.

Some social media users suggested the Witney centre needs to be reopened as the town is large and “is hardly the Outback”.

Andy Ayers posted on the Witney Gazette Facebook page: “Bring back the walk-in booster centre, we still need it in Witney.”

Angie Simpson replied: “You’re absolutely right. Witney does need a centre here.”

The clinic was a joint project between the Oxford NHS Trust, the Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group and West Oxfordshire District Council.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group and Oxford Health said:“The best way to ensure you get a jab is to make an appointment through the national booking service. The NBS is currently facing extremely high demand so if you cannot book at first, the NHS is asking those who are eligible to keep checking for appointments on the booking system as more become available every day.

“We are looking closely at overall provision for ramping up the delivery of boosters and jabs across Oxfordshire which will be delivered by GPs, Oxford Health vaccination services at the Kassam Stadium, community pharmacies, and other temporary sites. There are no immediate plans for an additional pop-up in Witney, but it is something that we will keep under review.”
