A POPULAR village pub has been sold – but its new owners intend to continue the business and add guest rooms.

The cosy Rose and Crown in Shilton, near Carterton, is Grade II-listed and was built in the 1600s. It had a guide price of £650,000.

The new owner, whose names has not been disclosed by agents Colliers, intend to convert a large barn at the rear, which sits in over three acres, to provide accommodation.

The pub's beamed ceilings, inglenook fireplace and timber-fronted servery bar made served as a perfect backdrop for scenes in the popular television drama, Downton Abbey.

The pub has traded independently for the last 15 years. Former owner, host-chef Martin Coldicott, sold the property to allow him to retire.

Elizabeth Koo Donnelly has been named as the new director of the business.

She said: “We were really pleased to find such a beautiful inn for sale, and we are excitedly looking forward to building on the legacy of the former owner and to create new accommodation in the barn that we are currently drawing up plans for.

"We are aiming to make The Rose & Crown a must visit destination in the region and to welcoming customers old and new.”
