The team behind Blenheim Triathlon have released a statement after the death of a participant at this year’s event.

Other swimmers noticed that Greater Manchester man Andrew Phillips was in difficulties during the lake swim element of the three-part event on May 28, Oxford Coroner’s Court heard last week.

The 56-year-old was rescued from the water by race officials and taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, where he died in the early hours of May 31.

In a new statement, Limelight Sports, which runs the annual triathlon event in the Blenheim Palace estate, said: “We are deeply saddened that a participant in the Blenheim Palace Triathlon passed away following this year’s event.

“We extend our deepest condolences to their family, friends and all affected.”

Senior coroner Darren Salter opened an inquest into Mr Phillips’ death last week. The full inquest was fixed for November 1.
