A man has been jailed for having a knife together with other offences in Witney.

Luke Gleeson, 34, of Queens Avenue, Kidlington, was sentenced to six months in prison at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (22/6).

He pleaded guilty to one count each of possession of a bladed article in a public place, criminal damage under £5,000 and possession of a controlled drug of class B, namely cannabis.

At around 2.10am on 9 January, officers were called on 999 to Gregory Place to reports of a man stood on top of a car brandishing a knife.

Officers arrived and challenged Gleeson with a Taser and a knife was removed from him.

Officers then arrested Gleeson and searched him, finding a quantity of cannabis in his possession.

Gleeson also damaged the car when standing on it so much that the insurance company wrote it off.

PC Nick Manifold, based at Witney police station, said: “Gleeson’s actions were very dangerous and irresponsible.

“He has caused such damage to an innocent member of the public’s car that it had to be written off, causing them considerable stress and hardship.

“I am delighted we have been able to see justice served and Gleeson has been given a custodial sentence as it is not his first offence of having a knife in a public place or for being in possession of cannabis.

“I hope he takes this time to reflect on his behaviour, which was totally unacceptable and this conviction shows we will not tolerate it.

“I would like to thank the members of the public for their support in this investigation and also to the victim who has shown considerable courage throughout this process and I hope the sentence provides them some comfort.”
