OXFORD United’s FA Youth Cup run was brought to an end by a terrific individual display from Jake Scrimshaw.

The striker bagged a hat-trick – his third of the season against the U’s – to fire Bournemouth to a 3-0 victory in the fourth-round clash.

Scrimshaw’s curled shot separated the sides at the end of a first half which United had largely controlled without capitalising.

And he netted twice in quick succession after the break to kill the tie and earn a last-16 meeting at home to Aston Villa.

U’s goalkeeper Max Evans made a smart early save to keep out Christian Saydee’s prodded shot from the edge of the box.

The hosts then took charge, piling the pressure on the Bournemouth goal.

Several balls were flashed across the six-yard box without anyone in yellow able to get a killer touch.

The closest United came was in the 19th minute, when Ryan Crooks’s shot on the turn was cleared off the line.

Bournemouth had rarely threatened, but took the lead eight minutes before the break with a touch of class.

Jake Cope got forward down the left and laid off to Scrimshaw on the edge of the box. Despite three defenders blocking his route to goal, the striker curled an inch-perfect finish into the top corner.

Kyran Lofthouse fired a James cross wide early in the second half, but after the U's lost Slavi Spasov to injury, Scrimshaw settled the tie with two goals in eight minutes.

He doubled the Cherries’ lead on the hour, expertly looping a header from Saydee’s ball into the box over Evans and into the net.

And it was 3-0 midway through the half when the striker fired a first-time shot low into the far corner from the edge of the box.

United kept plugging away, but could not get on the board in the closing stages.
