To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns

ADMISSION charges for all Oxford United first team matches at the Manor Ground were increased from 3s to 4s for adults and 1s 6d to 2s for juniors.

The price rise “regretfully” announced in a statement following a board meeting came into immediate effect.

“In order to bring the club into line with the policies of other clubs with whom Oxford United is in direct competition, the board of directors regret to announce it finds it necessary to increase ground admission charges,” the statement said.

The additional charges brought the club’s prices into line with the minimum charges made by Reading, Swindon, Tranmere, Brighton, and London’s Football League clubs.

United chairman Ron Coppock said: “We’ve been watching the situation for the last 12 months. We have put it off but now regretfully we cannot hold it off any longer.”

OXFORD United’s attempt to beat the Arctic English climate was foiled by rain.

The First Division promotion hopefuls, who had not played since January 5, flew out to Portugal to play Farense, but the friendly was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

United manager Jim Smith frantically tried to find a match against another side within reach of their base in the Algarve at Albufeira, without success.

“The conditions have been alright but we had very heavy rain and they had to call the game off,” Smith said.

OXFORD United’s players had to psyche themselves up all over again after their

eagerly-awaited FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest was postponed because of snow.

Police called the fourth round match off just after 10am because heavy snow had made stairways and approach roads dangerous.

The winners will go on to be at home to Tottenham or Wolves in the fifth round.

“The lads were really disappointed because everyone really fancied it,” said United right back Les Robinson.

“We felt very confident that we could do something at Forest, but we’ll beat them a week on Wednesday instead.”

The rearranged game finished 1-1, with Forest winning 3-0 in the replay at the Manor.
