To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns

1965

OXFORD United conceded four goals in a Division 4 game for the first time as their promotion hopes were dented by Aldershot.

A 4-1 defeat saw United’s long stay in fifth place brought to an end.

But results elsewhere offered a reprieve as only five points separated the top six teams.

JOHN Aldridge had cause for a double celebration – the striker netted twice in a 3-0 win over Division 2 leaders Manchester City to break the club’s scoring record.

The brace took his tally for the season to 26 – two more than Steve Biggins in the previous campaign.

And the ex-Newport striker was one of three U’s players named in the PFA’s Division 2 team of the year, along with Bobby McDonald and Billy Hamilton.

The win at the Manor catapulted them back into second place with three games in hand.

“I was a bit surprised how comfortable it was,” said United boss Jim Smith.

1996

OXFORD United won over their fans with a magnificent 3-0 derby victory over Swindon Town – and made them all believers.

The U’s took apart the Division 2 leaders with goals from Matt Elliott, Martin Aldridge and Joey Beauchamp, with the latter having left the Robins and returning to the Manor earlier in the season.

Skipper Mike Ford said: “Joey got a bit of stick towards the end with Swindon players trying to kick him.

“Joey’s goal probably answered a point or two.

"The fans have started to believe we can genuinely get promoted.

"It’s the first time I’ve heard them singing ‘we’re going up’.”
