ALEX Rodriguez Gorrin said Oxford United was the perfect fit after becoming the club’s first senior summer signing.

The 25-year-old agreed a two-year deal, which includes a 12-month option, with the Sky Bet League One club last night.

Rodriguez Gorrin joins United on a free transfer from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, where he caught the eye last season.

The U’s were not the only club keen on the holding midfielder, but the Spaniard felt the move to the Kassam Stadium suited him best.

“There were a couple of interested clubs, but Oxford were there from the start,” said Rodriguez Gorrin.

“They showed a lot of interest and belief.

“I think it’s a great option for me and I think it’s the perfect place to keep improving – I’m very excited.”

Rodriguez Gorrin’s journey has been a global one since he left Tenerife to sign for Sunderland as a 16-year-old.

He also played for New Zealand club Wellington Pheonix, Portuguese side Boavista, before joining Motherwell from Romanian outfit Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe 12 months ago.

Rodriguez Gorrin added: “I would like to keep improving as a player.

“I know League One is a tough division, there is a lot of quality and a lot of big teams, so I’m expecting a tough season.

“I’m mentally ready for it.”

“I did a little bit of research on the club when I heard they were interested and I was very excited.

“It’s a great club, they’re doing things right, and they have a new training facility which is outstanding.”

His arrival raises a question mark over whether Ahmed Kashi will return to United after his successful loan spell from French club Troyes last season.

But head coach Karl Robinson said the U’s were still in contact with the Algerian.

He added: “Kashi is at a very big club for the level in France and he has got another year left on a good wage.

“We can only do it as a loan – a permanent would be extremely difficult with the wage structure that we’re in.

“It’s still not a ‘no’, we’re still texting. He knows exactly where we are and he knows exactly where he is.”
