OXFORD United’s attempts to finish their transfer business should become more straightforward from today.

Last night the transfer window shut for clubs in the Premier League and Sky Bet Championship.

That left League One sides as the biggest fish in the market until their deadline on September 2.

And with the squads of the top two divisions now finalised, it becomes easier for them to allow players out on loan.

U’s boss Karl Robinson, who is still looking for three additions, said: “A different dimension kicked in after 5pm yesterday.

“We become the best of the rest, so we’re a club that someone might look at and go ‘hang on, that might not be a bad option any more.

“It allows the big boys to get out of the way. I think it’s clever the way they’ve done it.

“It gives young players at all these clubs a second opportunity to go on loan.

“It doesn’t starve the growth of their personal development and gives us an opportunity to bring them in. I think it’s the best for all parties.”

Robinson was aiming to bring in the first of two front men before the weekend.

There is still a decent chance of that happening, although it is unlikely the new man would be involved in tomorrow’s home game with Peterborough United.

That leaves two more vacancies, for which the U’s have a very clear criteria.

Robinson said: “We still want to bring in a holding midfield player, probably Wednesday next week.

“The player we’re going to bring in is just getting through something at his club.

“Then a winger/forward who is quick. We need a wide player who can run.

“The ones we’ve got at the moment are tremendous technicians, but don’t have the out-and-out pace that Gavin (Whyte) or (Marcus) Browne had.

“But also he can play as a striker if needed. That’s our objective.”
