TARIQE Fosu won plenty of praise from Oxford United fans for his display in today’s 1-0 victory over Peterborough United.

The summer signing impressed as the U’s triumphed in their first home game of the season, hitting the post after four minutes and linking well with James Henry and Ben Woodburn behind Jamie Mackie.

It came after the ex-Charlton forward scored in United’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland seven days ago, with Fosu and fellow new face Alex Gorrin both singled out by supporters speaking to the Oxford Mail on Facebook Live after the final whistle.

Matt Burden, from Oxford, said: “Gorrin and Fosu looked like they played here last season. They settled straight in and were very comfortable on the ball. They both look really good signings.”

He added: “It was a good performance in the first half, the second half looked a bit rusty. I was very impressed with Gorrin, I thought he shielded the defence really well all game.”

Cameron Brannagan scored the only goal of the match after 12 minutes, as United marked their first home game of the season with an encouraging attacking performance.

Woodburn and Chris Cadden were the other two summer signings in Karl Robinson’s starting XI, with the latter impressing William Tuck, from East Hagbourne, near Didcot.

William predicted United will finish ‘between second and fourth’ this season, while dad Barry was a little more restrained.

Mr Tuck said the financial woes experienced by Bolton Wanderers and Bury - both of whom have been hit by 12-point penalties - meant he was looking up the table, rather than down.

He added: “I think we’ve got a good chance of making the play-offs. It’s going to be a good season.”

Meanwhile, Mr Burden insisted he would be content with United finishing in a similar position to last season’s 12th-placed finish.

He said: “I still think we’re going to be mid-table. If we were promoted it would be a disaster, we haven’t got the infrastructure.”

But his friend, Dan Jackson, also from Oxford, said today’s performance gave him hope for the season ahead.

He said: “In the first half we moved the ball really well, second half we kept it fairly solid. There were plenty of positives.

“If we get a few good wins at the start of the season it’ll get our confidence up and we’ll see where it goes.”
