OXFORD United will be attempting to remove a jinx at the 11th attempt when they head to Highbury tomorrow – and this time they might have an ace up their sleeve.

The U’s did not meet Fleetwood Town until January 2013, but they have seen quite enough of them since.

In ten meetings their only highlights are two draws, which puts the Cod Army on an exclusive list.

Of the other 90 clubs in the top four divisions, the U’s have beaten 86.

And while they can be excused Salford City on the grounds that they are yet to meet, that leaves Liverpool (one draw in seven games), Tottenham Hotspur (three draws in nine games) and Fleetwood Town.

“Really? We definitely need to win,” Tariqe Fosu says when told of the barren record.

The surprise is in part down to the winger’s own record on the Fylde coast.

Two seasons ago he claimed a hat-trick – still his only professional treble – in a 3-1 away win at Charlton Athletic.

It was a dream return, having endured a tricky loan spell at Fleetwood in 2015.

He said: “It was a perfect one as well – header, left foot, right foot.

“I had been there on loan, it was my first one so it was a steep learning curve and playing against your old teams you want to do well.”

If Fosu can repeat that feat and end Fleetwood’s hex over United, he will be an instant hero.

But the 23-year-old has already made a big impression, scoring on the opening day of the season at Sunderland and then rescuing a point in the dying seconds against Coventry City last weekend.

Fankaty Dabo scored the own goal to make it 3-3, but it was all down to Fosu’s quick thinking and cool head in the 94th minute.

“The ball was going out, but I thought ‘I can get it here’,” he said.

“I kept it in and their guy slid in. When he did that I thought ‘ooh’ and just scooped it over him.

“If he stood still he would have won it, but he slid in.

“When I got past him I thought ‘there’s a chance here’ and I squared it.

“It’s just about hitting an area, it was into a dangerous place if the keeper didn’t get it. I was buzzing when it went in.”

And Fosu hopes it is a catalyst, for the team and himself, after a mixed opening month.

He said: “Saturday’s game was crazy. It’s good we got a point and now we can build on it. Hopefully we can get a result at Fleetwood and get a run going.

“I think there’s a lot more to come. We’ve got some quality players and with everyone fit I think we’ve got a strong side.

“When we get a result we’ll build momentum and everyone will be flying again.”

Fosu’s only issue so far has been a minor hamstring issue which is being closely monitored before this weekend.

And boss Karl Robinson, who was in charge of Charlton for the win in 2017, will give him every chance to play.

He said: “These are just teething problems with a young player.

“Last time he went there for me he scored three, so I’d much rather he was going there than not.”
