KARL Robinson hailed Oxford United’s 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United as the club’s best result at the Kassam Stadium.

The U’s blew away their Premier League opponents with an unstoppable second-half performance last night, as goals from Elliott Moore, Matty Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and Shandon Baptiste capped a sensational display.

It sent United through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the first time in 22 years, where they will now host Sky Bet League One rivals Sunderland at the end of October.

The club have produced some memorable giant-killings in recent years, but Robinson feels last night’s display topped any other result during United’s 18 years at Grenoble Road.

He said: “That 4-0 scoreline against a very strong West Ham team will probably go down as the biggest result here – and that surpasses any of the FA Cup games.

“We had the belief we could get a result today and I didn’t see anything to think any different.

“I’m over the moon for the fans and the players, but we’ve come here to build something for the future and we’ve got a lot of work still to be done.”

He added: “This is all about the players, the fans, and the communities of Oxfordshire.

“The key thing is that people who came here tonight for the first time in a long time buy a ticket for Saturday.”

Almost 10,500 fans packed into the Kassam Stadium to witness United’s first win over Premier League opposition since beating Swansea City 3-2 at home in the FA Cup in January 2016.

The result was even more impressive on account of Robinson making six changes to the team that started Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Lincoln City, with scorers Moore and Baptiste among those to come in.

United’s supporters left the ground dreaming of a plum tie against a Premier League giant and the U’s manager admitted hosting Sunderland was slightly underwhelming.

He said: “I don’t think it’s what everyone wanted. It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse – it could have been Sunderland away.

“It’s nice it’s back here though, it gives us a chance and it’s a winnable game.”

The one sour note of the night was an injury to midfielder George Thorne, who went to hospital after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder just 20 minutes into his first start for the club.

Robinson said: “That man has been through the mire for a number of years now and we’re bitterly disappointed.”
