OLDER fans will remember the Liverpool legend Steve Heighway, a fantastic winger who then turned into a brilliant coach and played a big part in so many young players coming through the academy at Liverpool.

He also helped me as a young coach and offered me so much great advice.

One of the things he taught me was that you never stop learning in football and you must never stop working.

Right now we are on the crest of a wave and doing really well in the league and the Carabao Cup – it’s fantastic for everyone concerned.

I hope all the fans went out and had a beer or two last Saturday after an amazing week which saw us win 6-0 at Lincoln, knock West Ham out of the League Cup and then pick up our fifth clean sheet in a row with a 3-0 victory over Gillingham.

I certainly went and had a couple of drinks because you have to enjoy times like that.

But the following morning I was back watching the Gillingham game and then looking at videos of Accrington Stanley.

To non football fans that is going to sound like a punishment on a Sunday!

But it was not just me who had turned their attention to the next match.

Our analysis team were clipping games and preparing videos for the players to watch.

The fitness team were in touch to plan the week ahead with Amy Cranston, our physio, calling me to discuss any knocks and bruises.

We were all working hard and doing our usual things – something that has continued all week.

I’ve been to a couple of games in the evenings, Faz went to one on Tuesday, and we have trained with our usual high intensity as we prepared for the game at Accrington today.

We have such an attention to detail. A young lad came in to take photographs at training on Thursday and was amazed that the starting XI were in their match shirts and the other team were in red, just like Accrington will be today.

Little things like that may seem trivial, but they all play a part in our pre-match ritual and it goes back to what Steve Heighway told me.

We have won a few games, but we are nowhere near where we want to be in the table.

Now is the time to see if we can push ourselves even further and work that little bit harder.

Can we turn a good run into a great one?

I’ve asked all of the staff and all of the players to find a little extra to try and make it happen.

I’M NOT sure how many people spotted it, but we are now just one point away from progressing in the Leasing.com Trophy when we resume in that competition against Portsmouth in midweek.

It would be good to make sure of our progress on Tuesday but it may also give us a chance to look at one or two of our younger players.

The under 23s have started playing more regularly recently and they have a chance to try and push their way into our thoughts.

But we also have a lot of senior players who are banging on my door asking when they are going to get a start as well!

It’s food for thought and should make for an interesting night and a really competitive game to enjoy.
