April 23, 1996: Oxford United 6, Shrewsbury Tn 0

A RAMPANT Oxford United tore Shrewsbury Town apart to edge closer to promotion from Division Two.

The U’s recorded their biggest league win since 1965 as they continued a sensational six-month unbeaten run at the Manor Ground.

All six goals came from headers on a remarkable night where Denis Smith’s men excelled in every department, while the visitors looked disinterested at best.

Paul Moody headed home David Rush’s cross on 16 minutes to put the hosts ahead and they never looked back.

Stuart Massey was next to join the party, doubling the lead after good work down the left from Joey Beauchamp.

Moody’s second came after the break when he deftly flicked a

free-kick into the far corner.

Rush then bagged a deserve goal as he nodded in a rebound from close range.

United were relentless and looked to increase their lead, Beauchamp grabbing their fifth with an unstoppable header.

Shrewsbury were on their knees and the U’s took advantage to claim their final goal in the dying seconds.

Substitute Matt Murphy was first to reach a flick on, crowning a sensational evening for United.
