OXFORD Hawks’ superb second half of the season continued with a 5-2 thrashing of Canterbury.

It saw the former relegation strugglers climb to sixth place with one game remaining in the men’s Division 1 South.

Canterbury started strongly and deservedly took the lead, but Hawks quickly levelled through Andy Watts.

An entertaining game under the floodlights continued, with the visitors edging ahead again.

Once more the hosts’ response was swift, Tom Miotto setting up Ed Tristem to make it 2-2 at half-time.

Hawks broke clear after the break, Ted Bennett finishing a flowing move to put them ahead for the first time two minutes after the restart.

Tristem’s second goal of the game gave the hosts breathing space, before Jack Biggs scored a penalty flick in the final minute after Matt Wood was brought down.

Oxford OBU’s title hopes in Premier Division 2 West of the South League were effectively ended by a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.

Zum Akhter and James Cutter were on target for the visitors, who could not force a winner despite playing against ten men in the latter stages.

With one game remaining they are now three points behind leaders Surbiton, who have a vastly superior goal difference.

Instead, Oxford need to better Staines’s result on the final day to secure a play-off place.

Elsewhere, the club’s fourth team were promoted from MBBO Division 4 with a game to spare after a 4-2 win against Leighton Buzzard 2nd.

Witney denied visitors Reading 2nd a chance to win the MBBO Regional 1 title as they earned a 2-2 draw.

Ben Moss gave the hosts a slender half-time lead, but Reading looked to have secured the points as they scored twice.

But in the final minute Fraser Barnard struck to keep the champagne on ice for Reading.
