JACK Stevens admitted he was happy to get some certainty about the future by signing a new contract at Oxford United.

The goalkeeper's previous terms expired this summer.

Talks about a new 12-month deal, which was signed today, were advanced when the coronavirus forced a suspension of league action until at least April 30.

But Stevens acknowledged with no guarantees over when football will be able to return, the prospect of the contract expiring at the end of June was an issue.

He said: "I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little bit (of worry), but the club have been quite good in communication with me and my agent.

"They said nothing’s changed, so it hasn’t been too bad.

"We’ve been talking for a few months now so I’m grateful the club have shown faith in me.

"I’m happy to get it sorted now because it is a strange time.

"People are going to be running out of contracts and the season might not be finished.

"I’m not sure what will happen there, so I’m grateful I’ve got it sorted."

The unusual circumstances continued today when he went to sign the paperwork at the Kassam Stadium.

He said: "It is strange. I’ve just been in to see Mick (Brown, United's secretary) and he’s the only person in the building.

"It is what it is at the minute.

"I’m just grateful to get it sorted now and I’m looking forward to when football returns and I can start training with the lads again."
