OXFORD United have appealed to supporters for suggestions in the way they can best help the local community through the coronavirus crisis.

Owner Sumrith ‘Tiger’ Thanakarnjanasuth says the club want to “play our part” to ease the unprecedented situation.

United have a wide reach locally and run community programmes all year round.

But they are keen to hear from fans on the best way to use their influence.

In a statement on the club’s website, Tiger said: “We can offer tickets for NHS staff when we come back.

“We can spread the word and use our communication channels to help get messages out for the charities doing great work across Oxfordshire and I know the players are keen to play their part and help as well.

“If you know a way that Oxford United can help then please get in touch and we will do our very best to make it happen.

“It is not easy but we want to play our part.

“All we ask is that you play yours as well.

“The most helpful thing that most people can do right now is stay at home and stay safe.”

Sports clubs have steadily come forward to help their local communities, who are in lockdown as part of the measures aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.

Oxford City Stars yesterday announced NHS and emergency services staff would have free entry to home games last season, while Woodstock Town last week launched a wide-ranging scheme to run errands for locals.

And United, as the biggest club in the county, have the power to assist the most people.

Tiger said: “The one thing I can see around the world right now is the need for communities to stick together and help each other.

“We are in a unique position in the heart of Oxfordshire and want to play a part wherever we can.”

The U’s owner also reiterated they wanted to finish the season once it was safe.

He said: “Some people have suggested to end it right now and the league tables stand.

“Since Oxford United are in third you might expect us to be pushing for that but that is not the case at all.

“We want to come back, finish the season and try to win promotion the right way.”
