OXFORD United cannot dwell on their play-off final defeat as they regroup ahead of next season.

That is the message to supporters from U's chairman Sumrith 'Tiger' Thanakarnjanasuth.

It had been hoped planning this week would be centred around having a crack at the Sky Bet Championship.

But Monday's 2-1 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley means they will be in the third tier again.

Tiger told the club's website: "Like all of our supporters I am so sad and felt so much pain.

"I really hurt still and feel very low after Monday night.

COMMENT: Wembley should not cloud memories of Oxford United's season

"I think because of lockdown we had all been looking forward to the play-off games even more than we would usually have done and to lose at Wembley was heartbreaking for so many people.

"We offer our congratulations to Wycombe and now we have the job of picking ourselves up and starting again.

“I think for 24 hours it was quite raw and we were all hurting but you cannot allow that to last for too long – the new season will be here very quickly and we have to be ready for it."

In the aftermath of the defeat a dejected Robinson said he wanted an indication of where United wanted to go next season.

Tiger said before the final they had two plans, depending on which division the club were in for the 2020/21 campaign.

“We have meetings planned for the next few days," he said.

"I said before the game that we have two sets of plans in place – one for the Championship and one if we remained in League 1.

"The plans are not so different – both are aimed at building on a very strong squad and being competitive next time around."

Next week will see season tickets go on general sale, after an impressive response last month from those renewing – despite at this stage there being no guarantee when supporters will be allowed to attend games.

And Tiger wants to be ambitious.

He said: "It is amazing that we sold 3,200 season tickets already before we knew which division we were in.

"We are well on track to pass last season’s figure but we want 5,000, maybe 6,000 season tickets and to keep growing our fanbase."

He added: "So my message to the fans right now is to allow yourself some time to recover after Monday but never forget that this is your club and we need your support more than ever at this time.

“We will be back and we will keep building. Be part of it.”
