OXFORD United are closer to finding out their opponents for next season after last night's conclusion to the Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Only one game had nothing riding on it and the drama continued until the dying moments, with Barnsley's late winner at Brentford sealing a miraculous escape at Wigan Athletic's expense.

The Latics could yet stay up if their appeal against a 12-point deduction for entering administration is successful, which would send Barnsley down along with Charlton Athletic and Hull City.

Sheffield Wednesday could also be in trouble as they wait to see whether they will be penalised for an alleged breach of the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules.

But with the regular campaign over, there is now a provisional 23 teams that United will face in League One in 2020/21.

The most eye-catching fixture is undoubtedly a resumption of hostilities with rivals Swindon Town, who were awarded last season's League Two title.

The sides last played in 2016/17, when Rob Hall's long-range strike secured a 2-1 victory in the County Ground in League One.

Meanwhile, the U's will face Hull for the first time since 2004, when they lost 4-2 in a top-of-the-table clash in the fourth tier.
