KARL Robinson praised Oxford United's board and Matty Taylor for finding a way to get a permanent deal over the line.

The striker, the U's top scorer as a loanee last season, has signed a three-year contract with the club.

It came after his release from Bristol City, ending three and a half years as a Championship player.

Robinson had urged United to show they meant business this summer and was delighted to get a key transfer over the line early.

But he also felt Taylor, who has needed to take a pay cut to move home, deserved plenty of credit.

The head coach said: "I want to thank the board and the shareholders for getting this deal done. It was a collective decision by everybody.

"Secondly, Matty Taylor's given away a lot of what he had in relation to where he was at with Bristol.

"He's accepted that he felt it was right he came home for the rest of his career, hopefully.

"He took that plunge and trusted in us.

"He came down from where he was as well, which shows you how much he wants to play for Oxford United.

"Theoretically it almost makes him a cult hero forever now."

Part of the conversations with the 30-year-old were around what else United would do in the transfer market this summer.

Robinson said: "There's a lot more work to be done to surround that.

"I promised him there would be more players coming in, so I've got to make sure I bring in the players I told him I would do."
