OXFORD United are attempting to tie Cameron Brannagan down to a new contract - but are unfazed about the possibility of him leaving for nothing next summer.

The midfielder is highly-rated and attracted interest from Leeds United last season.

Burnley have also been linked with the former Liverpool trainee, who has made 104 appearances for the U’s.

Brannagan only has 12 months left on his existing deal, but boss Karl Robinson wants to limit United’s sales this summer to just Rob Dickie.

And while the head coach would love to get a new long-term commitment from Brannagan, United would prefer to keep him for an extra season even if it meant he left for free in 12 months.

Robinson said: “We’re speaking about a new contract. That’s as much as I can tell you.

“No player will walk out of this building just because they’ve got a year left for less money than we think they’re worth.

“One year is still one year.

“I don’t think anybody has got that much time to wait for someone any more.

“If I was trying to sign Rob Dickie or Cameron Brannagan and I said ‘we’ll wait for you on a free in 12 months’, there’s a high probability I won’t be the manager.

“It’s the same price whether they’ve got one year or two years left and all the agents know that’s the stance we take.”
