FORMER Oxford United coach Des Buckingham has landed a role as assistant coach at Melbourne City.

The 35-year-old from Cowley, who began his career in the U’s academy, had been looking for a role after being let go from a highly successful time in charge of various New Zealand age group sides.

He has now joined A-League side Melbourne, who are part of the City Football Group which includes Manchester City, to assist ex-Leicester City defender Patrick Kisnorbo.

Buckingham, who knows the division well after a spell in charge of Wellington Phoenix, said: “Returning to the A-League and joining a club like Melbourne City with an exciting group of players is one I believe fits the mould for me as a coach and my footballing philosophy.

“City has established a style of play that has set themselves as one of the top teams in the league and I’m looking forward to working alongside Patrick and the team.”
