February 24, 1973: Swindon Town 1-3 Oxford United

Goals from Dave Roberts, Nigel Cassidy and Hugh Curran earned United a 3-1 derby victory at Swindon Town, WRITES JACK SALE.

The result ensured a Division Two double over the U's main rivals, with Cassidy also finding the net in a 1-0 home win in December 1972.

It was also the first time United had triumphed away at Swindon in the club's history.

Roberts gave the visitors the lead shortly before the break, hammering home Steve Aylott's left-wing cross.

United goalkeeper Roy Burton then had to stay alert to deny David Moss following a poor backpass, as Swindon became more frustrated.

The U’s doubled their advantage ten minutes into the second half, as Roberts headed on a corner and Cassidy turned it past the keeper.

Swindon pulled a goal back through Mick McGovern, but Curran sealed the win with United’s third goal in the dying minutes.

The result left the U's fourth in the second tier, while Swindon were struggling towards the foot of the table.

Gerry Summers' side finished a respectable eighth that season, with their rivals recovering to end the campaign 16th.

It would be thirty-eight years before United's next triumph at The County Ground.
