THEY were responsible for Oxford United's greatest day, but within two years many of the 1986 Milk Cup final-winning team had left, WRITES JACK SALE.

Here is what happened after that day at Wembley.

ALAN JUDGE

Stayed with United for another five years before leaving to join Hereford in 1991, having played 102 times for the club.

Returned briefly in the early 2000s, featuring twice and becoming the U’s oldest player aged 44.

DAVE LANGAN

The Republic of Ireland international played his final U’s game in September 1987, joining AFC Bournemouth a month later after a brief loan spell at Leicester City.

Injury ended his career in 1989 and he was later granted a testimonial, shared with Joey Beauchamp.

GARY BRIGGS

The longest-serving player in the team stayed for his ninth season and eventually departed for Blackpool in 1989, having made 508 United appearances.

MALCOLM SHOTTON

The Wembley captain made just 11 league starts the season after and joined Portsmouth in summer 1987.

Returned to manage the U’s in 1998, helping avoid relegation from the second tier.

JOHN TREWICK

Featured regularly for a year after the Milk Cup success, before joining Birmingham City in September 1987.

RAY HOUGHTON

The midfielder scored the second goal in the final but, like many of his teammates, played only one more season for United.

Houghton earned six of his Ireland caps in 86/87 and joined Liverpool for £825,000 before the 1987/88 campaign.

He went on to score at a European Championship and World Cup.

LES PHILLIPS

Remained at the club until 1993 and made more than 200 appearances, before joining Northampton Town.

Phillips scored the only goal in the crucial win over Everton ten days later, to help United stay in Division One.

TREVOR HEBBERD

The man of the match in the final netted the opener, one of 43 goals he scored for United before joining Derby County in 1988.

In return, United received cash for Hebberd, plus the late Micky Lewis.

KEVIN BROCK

The only starter to come through the youth system at United joined beaten finalists QPR in 1987 and followed Jim Smith to Newcastle United in 1989.

JEREMY CHARLES

Scored the third goal of the final to seal victory.

Only played eight games of the following season before his career was ended by injury, while he was controversially sent off at Arsenal in his last appearance.

He also gained the last of his 19 Wales caps that September.

JOHN ALDRIDGE

Scored 31 goals in all competitions in 1985/86, including two in the semi-final first leg against Aston Villa.

Joined hometown club Liverpool for £775,000 in January 1987, having scored 90 goals in 141 appearances.

ANDY THOMAS

Came through United’s youth system and was unfortunate to be an unused substitute at Wembley.

Was sold to Newcastle early in the following season.

PETER RHOADES-BROWN

Injury forced him to miss the final, but he played on until 1989.

Now United’s business development manager.

MAURICE EVANS (MANAGER)

Was originally caretaker when he took over from Jim Smith in 1985, but got the job full-time.

Kept United in the top division for two more seasons before he resigned in March 1988, with the club relegated soon after.
