LAST-MINUTE goals for Accrington Stanley and Crewe Alexandra kept Oxford United in the play-off mix.

The U's were not in action tonight, but with seconds of stoppage-time remaining the three teams below them were winning.

But in an extraordinary turn of events, Portsmouth's John Marquis - who had scored an overhead kick to give his side the lead moments earlier - put through his own net to hand Accrington a 3-3 draw.

AS IT HAPPENED: The twists and turns on an extraordinary night in League One

Meanwhile, Crewe's Owen Dale struck his second equaliser of the night at The Valley to peg Charlton Athletic back to 2-2.

That result kept the south London side eighth and means United only fall two places in Sky Bet League One ahead of Saturday's visit to Shrewsbury Town.

The U's started the night fifth, but that position is now occupied by Blackpool, who won 1-0 at Sunderland through Sullay Kaikai.

The Tangerines, on 71, are three points above United with a game in hand, while sixth-placed Portsmouth are two points further back.

Like the south coast side, United have played 44 matches, one more than Charlton, who are one more point behind.

Elsewhere, Lincoln won 1-0 at Shrewsbury to all-but book their spot in the top six.
