SOPHIE Baker’s first-half hat-trick set Oxford United Women on their way to a comfortable derby-day victory over Swindon Town Women.

The midfielder took just 31 minutes to complete her treble as the U’s won the National League Cup preliminary round tie at Court Place Farm.

United continued to dominate against the FA Women’s National League Division One South West outfit and Beth Lumsden scored twice after the break, the first a stunning dipping effort.

It saw the U’s maintain their 100 per cent home record, which now stands at four wins from four this season.

United controlled possession from the kick-off and within four minutes Baker gave them the perfect start.

Lauren Haynes floated in a corner from the right and her teammate got across her marker to plant a header into the net.

Carly Johns was causing plenty of problems cutting in from the left and would have made it 2-0 soon after, only for the linesman to flag for offside as she finished from close range.

The forward was denied twice more in quick succession, with Swindon keeper Emily McGrogan first clawing the ball away inside the six-yard box and then saving a powerful effort at the near post.

Rachel Panting headed wide in the meantime, but the U’s would not have to wait long for their second.

Johns had moved over to the right and beat her marker to race into the penalty area, before cutting the ball back for Baker to side-foot home.

The dangerous duo combined again two minutes later as Baker completed her hat-trick.

The midfielder was given all sorts of space in the box, allowing her to pounce on the rebound when Johns’s shot was parried by McGrogan.

The Swindon keeper made an excellent point-blank save to deny Baker her fourth, moments after a visiting player had sent an effort wide when through on goal. United were in complete control as half-time arrived and looked to add to their lead after the break, with Panting twice shooting over from the edge of the box.

The fourth arrived just after the hour mark – and what a goal it was.

Lumsden showed great feet to work space 20 yards out, before firing a dipping effort into the top corner.

Liam Gilbert used the break in play to make a triple substitution as Haynes, Emily Wallace and Sarah King were replaced by Cat Beaver, Lily Stevens and Daisy McLachlan.

Two more changes followed, with Daisy Ackerman and Molly Childerhouse on for Megan Alexander and Baker.

The substitutions did not disrupt United’s rhythm and Lumsden made it five with 12 minutes left.

Johns was again integral, advancing towards the edge of the box and feeding her teammate to fire past the helpless McGrogan.
