ONE of the first players to represent Oxford United in the Football League has died.

Former goalkeeper Owen Medlock passed away on Sunday, aged 83.

The ex-stopper was between the sticks for United’s first game in the Football League, a 3-2 defeat at Barrow on August 18, 1962.

Medlock had already played for Chelsea and Swindon Town when he arrived at the Manor Ground in December 1959.

He helped the U’s win back-to-back Southern League titles in 1961 and 1962, with the club elected to Division Four of the Football League at the end of the latter season.

Medlock kept 38 clean sheets in 133 United appearances and played his final game on May 23, 1963 – a 1-0 defeat at Newport County.

The goalkeeper joined Chelmsford City and helped them win the Southern League in 1968, before retiring a year later.
